Arnold Francis Chaddock
March 29, 1926 – August 23, 2019

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Arnold Francis Chaddock on August 23, 2019. Arnie passed away at Shuswap Lake General Hospital in Salmon Arm, BC at the age of 93 years, surrounded by his loved ones.

Arnie was born on March 29, 1926 in Revelstoke, BC and was a resident his whole life. He started working as a wiper for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1943. The CPR gave him leave soon after to join the army, and he took basic training in Dundern, SK, and later planted trees on Vancouver Island in the hills around Port Alberni. He married Dee Chaddock on November 20, 1947. He worked as a Fireman when he returned to the CPR, was promoted to Locomotive Engineer, and retired in March 1986 with 43 years of continuous service.

Arnie was a man of many talents and interests. A self-taught carpenter, he built both of his homes in Revelstoke, as well as many fine pieces of furniture, clocks, and birdhouses. He always had a keen interest in the natural world, and enjoyed birding, rockhounding, gardening, berry picking, fishing, and quadding. Arnie was well known for his birding hobby: he contributed over 200 birdhouses to increase the Mountain Bluebird population, and his bird photography was featured in local media and in Dr. Wayne Campbell’s Birds of British Columbia. An active member of the Revelstoke community, Arnie was a founding member of the Illecillewaet Greenbelt Society and was nominated for the 1993 Minister’s Environmental Award.

Arnie is remembered for his keen mind, wicked sense of humour, and love for his wife and family. An ardent music lover, many hours were spent listening to records, and he was delighted by private concerts when his granddaughter took up the accordion. The eternal prankster, he loved to place a whoopie cushion, plastic bug, or worse in the path of his unsuspecting family and friends! He and Dee liked to play cards in the evenings, and he would draw funny sketches of the unfortunate loser next to their scores. He liked to reminisce about his days on the railroad, and entertained many with his with storytelling abilities. Arnie didn’t hesitate to lend a helping hand. He delivered meals and a smile or laugh in his years as a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He was an extraordinary person and will be missed dearly.

Arnie loved his family and was central in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 71 years, Dorothy Doreen “Dee” Chaddock; his beloved daughter, Lynne Babak; and his mother, Bertha Coueffin. Arnie is survived by his two children Nola (Tony) Woodcock and Arne Jr. (Doris) Chaddock; his son-in-law Peter Babak; his eight grandchildren Jody (Faye) Babak, Scott Babak, Kelly Babak, Chelaine Woodcock (Rodney Clarke), Kristy Woodcock (Dan Smith), Addie Chaddock, AJ (Mindy) Chaddock, and Bryce Chaddock; 10 great grandchildren, and many dedicated nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. McLeod for his dedicated care over the years and Dr. Aitchison for her phenomenal care in hospital. They would also like to thank Dan Smith, Hazel Manser, Sheila Lewis, and Britt Jurgens for helping Arnie in his home this year.

A celebration of life for Arnie and Dee will be held on October 5th at 1:00 pm at the Revelstoke Senior Centre, 603 Connaught Ave, Revelstoke, BC.

The family of Kurt and Susan Huettmeyer wish to express their deepest gratitude to all of the individuals who reached out to us after the tragic, sudden loss of our beloved daughter, Leslie Anna Bjerland (Huettmeyer).

We were very moved with the many acts of kindness shown towards each of us.

We were also left speechless at the number of individuals who expressed how they were touched by Leslie through her kindness, humor, love and positive outlook on life.

I would like to share one of Leslie’s favorite quotes: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass….it’s learning to dance in the rain.”

We are left with an immense hole in our hearts however we are thankful at how much better all of us are just to have known her but for such a short while.

I would like to close with a quote from Rev. Peter Bjerland’s Meditation that he spoke at Leslie’s funeral: “We must look for Leslie’s presence in new and different ways. We must keep the eyes of our heart open.”

Thank-you so much for supporting our family with your love and kindness to help ease the pain…..We will be forever grateful,

Warmly,

The Huettmeyers

Obituary Notice – Elizabeth “Lil” Sutherland

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our sister, aunt and friend, Elizabeth “Lil” Sutherland at Queen Victoria Hospital on Tuesday, October 22 nd, 2019 at the age of 70 years. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Revelstoke on Wednesday, October 30 th, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Cecil Nunez celebrant. A tea will follow in the Catholic Church Hall. Interment of Lil’s cremated remains will take place in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia at a later date. Honorary Pallbearers are Steven Sleeman, Peter Sutherland, Jeffrey Sutherland, Dillon White, Jason White, Kyle Sutherland and Adam Fujino. In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice in memory of Lil. There will be no visitation at Lil’s request.

Lil was born on July 12, 1949 at Soldiers Cove, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Agnes (MacDonald) Sutherland. She was a nanny most of her life and cared for children too numerous to mention. She had a great memory, and could name all the children she cared for, and all the people she met along the way. If you needed to know someone, just ask Lil.

Lil moved to Revelstoke, B.C. 34 years ago and made Revelstoke her home. She was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Lil donated many hours at the church hall helping at events and behind the scenes preparing for events. She was always there for anyone who needed a helping hand and would change her own plans to accommodate others. She loved to walk, and spent endless time walking around town, chatting with people along the way, and visiting those who lived alone. Her love for her family was endless and has proven that many times over.

She would drop whatever she was doing to come to help. She loved a good cup of strong tea, and just sitting and relaxing, chatting about back home. Lil was known for her tasty fish cakes and although she gave out her recipe, there was no matching the taste of Auntie Lil’s fish cakes. Lil loved Cape Breton music, and when you walked through her door, you could dance a jig from the music inside. She loved to laugh, and within minutes of visiting with her, you were bending over with laughter. She was Auntie Lil to us all, and we will forever hold her in our hearts.

Lil was predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Agnes Sutherland, her infant brother Michael and her infant nephew Joseph White. We who are left behind with heavy hearts and memories of Lil are: her brothers: Les (Linda) of Revelstoke, Michael (Mary) of Revelstoke, Pat (Maureen) of Howie Center, Cape Breton and Allan (Terry) of Revelstoke; sisters: Martha (Peter) Sleeman of Richmond, B.C., Jessie (Raymond) White of Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Margaret (Austin) Martell of Soldiers Cove, Cape Breton, Laura (Hughie) MacMillan of St. Andrews, Nova Scotia as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to Jeffrey, Heather and Lisa for your endless love for Auntie Lil, and the continued support you gave to her when she needed it most. She was so very proud of you. Thank you to Norman, Diane, Laura, Cheryl and Adam for being Lil’s second family and for your kindness and love for Lil over the years.

A special thank you to Dr. Jarmula who was there for us in a very difficult time. Your kindness and support was greatly appreciated. Thank you also to the nurses who provided excellent nursing care, and to the staff of Moberly Manor where Lil was treated like family.
