Idelle Lavinia Durrand 1927 - 2015

Idelle Lavinia Durrand
1927 – 2015

With our heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Idelle at the Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke, BC, on July 3, 2015, at the age of 87 years.  There will be a Celebration of Life held at Moberly Manor on Saturday, July 11, 2015, from 2 pm to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Revelstoke Hospice Society c/o P.O. Box 3133, Revelstoke, BC, V0E 2S0, in memory of Idelle.

Idelle was born in Revelstoke, BC, on July 24, 1927, and had been a lifelong resident. She had a love of the outdoors and her interests came in the form of camping, boating, hiking, and going to the lake. Ever since Idelle was young she had a love for dogs. When the time came and she could not own one anymore, she would spoil the “puppies” that were not hers.

Over the years, Idelle was constantly complemented on her “high style” fashion. She could never have enough jewelry, makeup, shoes, and beautiful clothing. This love for fashion lead her to a job at the local clothing store in Revelstoke, which then lead to part-time modeling. Idelle was always modest about her style and fashion, but prided herself on looking her best.

Over the years, Idelle touched many people’s lives. She participated in T.O.P.S for many years and met many lifelong friends there. She always had a smile and a quiet charm about her that was infectious to the people around her. Over the years, she did have her battles with health, but always kept a positive attitude. Idelle will be missed by many people but will live on in the hearts left behind.

Idelle is lovingly remembered and survived by her daughter Heather Durand; sons: Kenneth Durrand (Smoker) and Glen Durrand; her grandchildren: Nicole, Colin, Devin, Kelsey, and Trevor. Idelle was predeceased by her husband, William Durrand (Tyke), her parents Elizabeth and Henry George, and her brother Kenneth George.

Messages of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting Idelle’s obituary notice at www.brandonbowersfuneralhome.com.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Brandon Bowers Funeral Home, Revelstoke.

Mervin Peter Krywa 1945 - 2015

Mervin Peter Krywa
1945 – 2015

Merv Krywa’s death this spring prompted Premier Christy Clark to write a letter of condolence to his widow, Judy. A family friend made the letter available to The Current, which is happy to publish this posthumous recognition of Merv Krywa’s contribution to community life.

In her May 20 letter, the premier wrote:

Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of Merv. He lived life to the fullest, and never stopped finding new ways to help his friends and neighbours — from coaching their sons’ hockey teams, to saving their lives in search and rescue and firefighting. Merv was there to help.

Merv touched a lot of lives in a lot of different ways — but in every case, he made them better. For that, he will be long remembered, and sadly missed by everyone who knew him. We should all be so lucky to leave such a lasting mark.

Struck by his passion for his hometown — and signature sense of humour — I understand how I became such an integral part of his community.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.

Sincerely,
Christy Clark
Premier

Margaret Jane “Peggy” Norberg 1923 - 2015

Margaret Jane “Peggy” Norberg
1923 – 2015

Peggy’s life was defined by her strength and grace. Born in Revelstoke British Columbia, on October 6, 1923, Peggy grew up with her Mom (Jean), Dad (Jock), brother (Ian) and sister (Betty). With her parent’s strong Scottish roots, music and dancing were a large part of their lives. Her dad was a worldship piper and played for the Queen of England. Peggy was a hard worker, and after marrying Johnny Norberg, she raised three boys while teaching highland dancing and forming a highland pipe band. Peggy loved the water and spent many wonderful years at her cabin in Mara Lake, hosting friends and family and singing and dancing to the bagpipes.

Over the last 10 years, dementia impacted how Peggy was able to live her life, but her spirit and beauty remained. While at times she was unable to recognize those closest to her, her kind and gracious manner remained. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Johnny, sister Betty, youngest son Ritchie and eldest grandson Bradley. At her time of passing, she was the loving mother to Rod and Randy, grandmother to Blair (Shawna) and Nicole (Simon), great grandmother to Cierra, McKenna and Eli, and sister to Ian.

Clear in her wishes, Peggy wanted to contribute to future generations through organ donation, specifically for Alzheimer’s research. Once returned to her family, her remains will be brought to place she loved most, Mara Lake. In true Peggy fashion, she did not want the “fuss” of a funeral. Instead, we will take this time to honour her life by personally reflecting on our favorite memories of her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.

“There are no goodbyes, Cheerio” ~ Peggy

Obituary Notice — Mary Fraser McAskill (nee Macdonald) 1936 - 2015

Obituary Notice — Mary Fraser McAskill (nee Macdonald)
1936 – 2015

It is with great sadness we announce that Mary McAskill passed away at Mount Cartier Court on September 22, 2015, in the company of her daughters, Catherine and Heather.  Born in Vancouver, BC, on September 23, 1936, Mary relocated to Revelstoke in 1968.  Predeceased by her love, Alistair in 1996 and her parents, Catherine Macdonald in 1967 and Donald Macdonald in 1970.

Survived by her loving daughters, Catherine (Dwayne) Bellerose of Revelstoke and Heather (Kevin) Bakay of Kelowna and step-daughter Sharon (Michael) Shepherd of Kelowna; grandchildren Emma and Hannah Bellerose, Meghan and Ainsley Bakay, Sean Shepherd, Nicole (James) Lamey and great-grandchildren Adam and Sophie Lamey; along with extended family members, outstanding neighbours and friends.

Upon high school graduation, Mary was employed in accounting functions at various car dealerships in the Vancouver area.  After her marriage to Al in 1967 and her relocation to Revelstoke, Mary worked for a short while as a library clerk for School District #19 before turning to the job she truly excelled at, that of a full-time mother and chief organizer of the busy household.  Mom took this job very seriously and took a lead role in the school parent councils and events and all other activities of Catherine and Heather.  In addition, Mary was devoted and supportive of Al’s many community organizations and herself being a very active member and volunteer in the community of Revelstoke. Mary returned to the workforce in 1986 at the Okanagan Regional Library as a part-time community librarian.  This seemed an ideal match where she could combine her love of reading umpteen books a week while socializing with the library patrons.  Once her granddaughter Emma was born in 1998, Mary decided that working 1 day a week was less fun than boarding a bus to go visit in St. Albert.

Mary grew up next to a bowling alley in Vancouver and she was an active bowler in Vancouver and Revelstoke for many years.  In more recent years she enjoyed many laughs, strong friendships and activities with her red hat group.  Fridays were always reserved for Rummoli night with the ladies! Mom and Joy could often be seen for lunch at Emo’s, their favorite restaurant.  Mary enjoyed a quiet game of solitaire with the bagpipes playing in the background and always had a stack of crossword books on the go.

Many thanks to Dr. Sara Brown for her care of mom and to the dedicated caregivers at Mount Cartier Court for their compassion and assistance provided during her 11-month residency.

A memorial service will be held at the Revelstoke United Church, Saturday, September 26th at 11am with Reverend Ken Jones officiating.  Cremation.  Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of donations to the Revelstoke Community Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia.

Arrangements are in the care of Brandon/Bowers Funeral Home, Revelstoke, BC.
